UAMS Pain Fellowship Rotations
Rotation Duration Description
UAMS Jackson T Stephens Spine Clinic 7 Months The majority of fellowship year will be spent at the UAMS Jackson T Stephens Spine Clinic focusing on interventional pain management.  The experience provides a wealth of experience in outpatient management of chronic pain.  In addition to basic techniques, the fellows receive significant experience with neuromodulation, vertebral augmentation, sympathetic blocks, radiofrequency ablation, epidural steroid injections, as well as, peripheral joint and nerve blocks.
VA Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 10 Weeks The physical medicine and rehabilitation rotation is located at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital. Dr. David Culver, who is board certified in PM&R and pain medicine, serves as the site director. The clinic is co-located with physical therapy, occupational, chiropractic, and acupuncture, which allow significant exposure to these areas. Areas of focus for this rotation include regenerative medicine, radiofrequency ablation, and joint injections.
UAMS Neurosurgery 2 Weeks The fellow will rotate with Dr. Erika Petersen to gain additional surgical training and exposure to neurosurgical placement of spinal cord stimulators, peripheral nerve stimulators, as well as intrathecal pumps.  Fellows will learn when to seek neurosurgery consult and explain the basics of intraoperative monitoring. Additional opportunities exist for observation of advanced spine procedures with other neurosurgical faculty.
UAMS Acute Pain 2 Weeks Fellows rotate with the Acute Pain Service (APS) with a focus on ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. The fellows participate in rounds helping to guide inpatient management.  Fellows are expected to lead rounds and help supervise residents while on service.
VA Palliative Care 2 Weeks Fellows rotate with the Little Rock VAMC Palliative Care Service to gain an appreciation for medical management of cancer pain as well end of life care. This is a primarily outpatient experience with engaging faculty interested in teaching.
VA Neurology 2 Weeks The outpatient experience with the Little Rock VA Neurology service is geared toward general neurology as well as multiple sclerosis. Fellows will gain an experience in detailed neurologic exams and imaging interpretation.
VA Psychiatry 2 Weeks The Psychiatry rotation at the Little Rock VA Medical Center is geared toward addiction medicine and exposure to buprenorphine treatment of opioid use disorder.  Additional exposure to psychotherapy is available.
